While it seems that we hear the same story every year around this time, charitable organizations that help those in great need are in need of help more than ever because of the recession.
Our chiropractor the other day had an event that drastically cut the price of a visit in exchange for canned food donations that would be given to the local food bank. So, my daughters went to the store and picked up 10 cans of food to take with us. Now think about it. Even if each can of food were a dollar, you would be able to help at least one needy family with such a small contribution. This is about the cost of a single movie ticket, and less than the cost of the popcorn/drink combination.
Here in Charlotte, organizations that depend on the United Way are hurting more than ever because of the pay scandal involving a very self-absorbed CEO who was released last year. However, since the pay scandal, many folks have cut back or eliminated their contributions entirely. I personally have always chosen to give directly to the causes of my choice, and resented having lots of pressure placed on me by corporate department heads to give so they could make their metric. Giving needs to be done from the heart, not just the wallet.
So do me a favor, consider dropping off some food or a few bucks at a food bank or shelter this week. I know the economy is tough, but with just the simple sacrifice of a movie ticket or lunch out, you can help a family this Thanksgiving, and be blessed as a result.
