This last week, I was able to catch up with a long-time friend and talk about his situation. In our initial contact email, one of the things he mentioned is a manager who is "a piece of work." This is not an infrequent occurrence in the corporate work environment at all.
Corporate environments are notorious for promoting individuals as a reward and eventually putting them in a position that does not leverage their strengths. This is the famous "Peter Principle". Other reasons a manager might get promoted is because of politics, favoritism, nepotism, etc. This can make for a miserable experience for the subordinates, and it eventually impacts productivity. I'm currently reading "The One Minute Manager" by Kenneth Blanchard. While it is an older book, the advice is appropriate for managers in the workplace. Whether you are in a management position or not, consider reading this great book. Don't let yourself become "a piece of work".
