I spent several articles this week attacking short-sighted and negative thinking. Yes, there is a tough market out there. This is the most difficult job hunting environment in at least 20 years. While it's easy to complain about things and not make any headway, it's just as easy to tell others to just toughen up and take responsibility for their job search. However, I also believe that it's important to encourage those in transition, and to provide resources that may be of assistance to them. With that, here are some excellent reading suggestions to help you find your passion and to conduct an effective job search.
48 Days To The Work You Love and No More Mondays by Dan Miller. Both of these books have made a lasting impact on me. The first is a book I have used with my clients in their job pursuit, and the second book I use with clients who might want to consider entrepreneurship, or even a side business part-time. There are also many other products, newsletters, and podcasts on the 48Days.com website to provide assistance to the job seeker.
In a Pit With a Lion On a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson. This book encourages the reader on identifying and seizing opportunity. This inspiring book will motivate you to find your passion. Every person I have given this book too has mentioned being changed and encouraged to pursue their passion in life.
Linchpin: Are You Indispensable by Seth Godin. Seth is a genius who routinely talks to others about thinking and acting outside the box. He has his finger on the pulse of the new workplace and will inspire you to think far differently than you are used to. I am reading this book, but routinely follow Seth's blog and am have read other books of his.
If you're out of work, uncertain of your employment future, or just frustrated in general, you owe it to yourself to make a change in your life. The idea of staying with one employer for a career are basically over. Most jobs average only 3.2 years in length. Additionally, those who do work they love tend to be happier and healthier. Watch less TV and do things that will improve you.
